Parks directors with the City of American Canyon Parks and Recreation Department and avian biologists from the Napa-Solano Audubon Society and the American Canyon Community & Parks Foundation dedicated a 340-foot elevated tidal marsh observation boardwalk, optical viewing scopes, and a solar live-stream osprey nesting platform on Sunday afternoon at Wetlands Edge Park at 2 Wetlands Edge Road (at Eucalyptus Drive) in American Canyon. Bordering 400 acres of restored Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Area tidal sloughs along the lower Napa River and San Francisco Bay Trail, the shoreline trailhead welcomes more than 120,000 annual hikers, cyclists, and birdwatchers.
Supported on helical steel pilings above seasonal king-tide pickleweed marshes, the new 10-foot-wide recycled-redwood boardwalk connects the Eucalyptus Drive glass-beach trailhead to a semicircular wildlife observation blind. Three coin-free 20x60 weatherproof spotting scopes—including a lowered 36-inch wheelchair-accessible optic—allow visitors to observe white pelicans, avocets, Ridgway's rails, and canvasback ducks feeding across the mudflats.
Two hundred yards offshore on the marsh levee, wildlife crews erected a 35-foot cedar nesting pole topped with a 54-inch woven-willow osprey platform and a sheet-metal predator-guard baffle. An integrated silent solar-powered 4K PTZ camera on the upper crossarm streams live nesting video directly to the American Canyon Ecology Center and local Napa Valley elementary school classrooms.
The $265,000 shoreline wildlife project was funded by the American Canyon City Council using a San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority Measure AA community grant and Napa County Park and Open Space District funds. Visitors can check Bay Trail access maps on the City of American Canyon Parks and Recreation Portal.
