Structural engineers with the City of Calistoga Public Works Department and watershed conservationists from the Napa County Resource Conservation District reopened the historic Napa River Pedestrian Footbridge and streamside amphitheater steps at Pioneer Park at 1308 Cedar Street on Saturday morning, completing an eight-week seismic and flood-resilience retrofit ahead of the winter rainy season. Spanning 95 feet across the upper Napa River channel one block west of downtown Lincoln Avenue, the footbridge serves as a cherished car-free link between residential Cedar Street neighborhoods, the Calistoga Saturday Farmers Market, and the Napa Valley Vine Trail northern terminus.
To eliminate an in-stream concrete pier that previously trapped winter flood debris and scoured chinook salmon and steelhead trout spawning gravel, contractors hoisted a clear-span weathered Corten-steel Pratt truss onto deep micropile abutments set back fifteen feet behind the top of the riverbanks. The new 8-foot-wide bridge deck is surfaced with sustainably harvested Mendocino County clear-heart redwood planks and illuminated by recessed warm-amber handrail LEDs that prevent night glare on the water below.
Along the south bank beside the Pioneer Park picnic grove, stonemasons replaced crumbling concrete retaining walls with terraced Napa Valley basalt sitting steps interplanted with native red osier dogwood, torrent sedge, and valley oak saplings. An interpretive river-gauge monument marks historical high-water lines alongside live QR links to upper Napa River stream-flow sensors.
The $780,000 bridge and riparian restoration was funded through the California Department of Water Resources Urban Streams Restoration Program and City of Calistoga Measure A watershed funds. Residents and visitors can view park reservation details and upper Napa River trail maps on the City of Calistoga Parks and Recreation Portal.
