Napa County Loses 65 Winery Licenses as Caltrans Schedules 55-Hour Weekend Closure of Highway 37
Active winery permits sit 180 below their 2025 peak amid a third straight October contraction, while North Bay commuters and harvest trucks face a 40-mile detour starting Friday night.

Napa County's wine industry recorded a sharp licensing contraction during the height of the autumn crush, shedding 65 active winery licenses in the single week ending October 12, 2026. State alcoholic beverage licensing records analyzed on Thursday, October 22, by Napa Valley Features show that the decline marks the third consecutive October drop in county winery registrations and leaves total active permits 180 below their 2025 peak, with the majority of lapsed licenses belonging to boutique brands founded since 2020.
At the same time that vineyard operators and tasting rooms in Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga navigate diverging harvest economics, North Bay hospitality workers and freight haulers face a major weekend transportation disruption. Caltrans announced that State Route 37 will be completely closed in both directions between Mare Island in Vallejo and State Route 121 at Sears Point for 55 consecutive hours—from 10:00 p.m. Friday through 5:00 a.m. Monday—to complete emergency roadway repairs after high water damaged the highway corridor, ABC7 News reported.
During the 55-hour Highway 37 shutdown, drivers traveling between Solano, Napa, Marin, and Sonoma counties must follow a 40-mile signed detour via Interstate 80, Interstate 680, and State Route 12 through Jameson Canyon and Carneros. Elsewhere in the North Bay wine country corridor, City Manager Jeff Kay and Community Development Director Scott Duiven confirmed that Healdsburg has paused its $1.93 million Metropolitan Transportation Commission-funded station area specific plan while residents challenge Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit over moving a planned train depot from Hudson Street to Vine Street, Patch noted.
Napa Valley Vintners and county transportation planners advise tasting room visitors and agricultural trucking fleets to schedule extra travel time along Highway 29 and Highway 12 throughout the weekend.
