Napa Valley Vineyard Robot Thorvald Named to TIME's Best Inventions of 2026 List
Saga Robotics' autonomous UV-C treatment vehicle recognized internationally for eliminating chemical fungicides across premier Northern California viticulture estates.

Saga Robotics' autonomous vineyard robot, Thorvald, which is actively deployed across dozens of premier wine estates in Napa Valley and Sonoma County, was officially named to TIME magazine's prestigious Best Inventions of 2026 list on Tuesday. Developed to combat powdery mildew using automated nighttime bursts of ultraviolet (UV-C) light, the robotic vehicle represents a major technological breakthrough that allows vineyard managers to protect delicate wine grapes without spraying synthetic chemical fungicides.
Operating autonomously between vine rows under the cover of darkness when powdery mildew fungal organisms are most vulnerable and unable to repair cellular DNA damage, Thorvald navigates sloped Napa hillside terrain using high-precision RTK GPS and 3D LiDAR sensors. Over the 2026 growing season, participating Napa estates reported a 75 percent reduction in chemical tractor passes, dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and diesel soil compaction while completely controlling fungal outbreaks.
Napa Valley Grapegrowers leaders and UC Davis viticulture researchers commended the international recognition, noting that robotic UV-C technology protects vineyard worker respiratory health, preserves beneficial insect populations, and safeguards Napa River watershed runoff. Several Napa wineries have already placed orders to expand autonomous robot fleets ahead of the 2027 spring bud break.
Grapegrowers, agricultural engineers, and vineyard professionals can review comprehensive field trial data, solar charging configurations, and agronomic case studies online at napagrowers.org and sagarobotics.com. Inquiries regarding vineyard demonstration tours and clean-farming technical grants can be directed to the Napa Valley Grapegrowers association Monday through Friday at (707) 944-8311. A public robotics showcase will be presented at the upcoming Napa Viticulture Fair in December.
